Laying Down the Pavement

Keeping Your Asphalt Maintained

by Clifton Sullivan

Maintaining your asphalt surfaces can be an important step for minimizing the damage that they sustain from routine wear. While asphalt is fairly simple to maintain, there are some essential tasks that you will have to do.

Cleaning The Surface Of The Asphalt

Cleaning the surface of your asphalt pavement can be the simplest of the maintenance work that this part of your property will require. Luckily, this is a type of maintenance work that can be completed fairly easily and quickly. If you use a pressure washer, you will be able to fully clean the surface of the asphalt very quickly while still being able to effectively clean the small pores and other openings in the surface of the asphalt. When using a pressure washer, you should always wear protective eyewear to avoid the risk of small pebbles or other debris hitting your eyes.

Repairing Any Cracks That May Have Formed

Over time, cracks will inevitably form on the surface of the asphalt. These cracks could cause serious problems for the asphalt if they are not repaired. More specifically, patching these cracks will eliminate the ability of water, vehicle fluids and other debris getting into these openings as these materials could contribute to the crack growing in size. To patch these cracks, a person will be able to use asphalt patching kits that will contain enough material to allow them to rapidly and effectively close these openings. If this work is done correctly, the patch may be fairly discrete, but you can always sealcoat the pavement after these repairs to further minimize their visibility.

Resurfacing The Asphalt Pavement

If the asphalt pavement has suffered widespread wear and surface damage, there are options to help alleviate these issues. Resurfacing the pavement is perhaps the most effective way of dealing with these surface damages. During the resurfacing process, the worn and damaged layer of the pavement will be removed before a new layer of asphalt will be applied. This process can be somewhat lengthy, but it is the most economical option for fully restoring the entire surface of the asphalt.

Asphalt maintenance and care can be integral for allowing this surface to last for as long as possible. Unfortunately, property owners can be prone to neglecting this essential work, which can cause severe wear and tear. To combat this problem, the basic care of regularly washing the asphalt, sealing cracks that form, and resurfacing the pavement when it is severely worn can be steps that allow this surface to last for decades before it will have to be replaced.
